historic180The Naeset-Roe home in Stoughton was recently honored with the designation as a local landmark from the Stoughton Landmark Commission. The home built in 1878 by Norwegian immigrant and architect Jens Naeset is a splendid example of Italianate architecture.

As with most homes of this age there have been a few changes over the years. A summer kitchen and sleeping porch were added in the 20’ and the kitchen was made the primary kitchen in the 40’s.

Jens Naeset was also known for his work at Luther Collage in Iowa, where is designed many of the buildings and was also on the board of directors for many years.

While living in Stoughton he opened his home as a halfway house for other Norwegian immigrants that were moving to the area. People stayed until they could find housing and employment at any number of different factories in town, such as the Mandt Wagon Factory.

Today the house is known as The Naeset-Roe Inn a bed and breakfast. Carl Povlick is now the owner and continues to open the house to travelers from all over the world. The four bedrooms on the second floor have been remodeled and now have their own bathrooms and enhanced with whirlpools and fireplaces. The sleeping porch is still a good place to get a great nights sleep with the cool evenings of fall.
